My family and I have been in France for the past three weeks. During this period, I’ve had the opportunity to spend time with the photographic genius behind our publication, Raphael Barberi.

If you don’t know, Raphael provides all the original images we use in our articles. He has an eye for capturing beauty unlike any other, and it has been an absolute pleasure working with him over the past months. It is easy to say that Letters from the Old World simply would not be the same without him.

Today’s article is inspired by a conversation Raphael and I had over breakfast one morning. Somehow, the topic of my socks got brought up, and I mentioned that they were a Christmas gift from my wife: silk écru socks modeled after a pair worn by Napoleon. What better gift could there be for a lover of both history and menswear?

As the conversation progressed, we realized that one of the easiest ways to enchant the world around you is simply to elevate the small, seemingly everyday objects in your presence. Even something as simple as socks can take on a whole new meaning when made special in this way.
