Learning to dress well can be a challenge in our casual world. Many men have become so thoroughly divorced from the rules of classic style that they are left without a compass. They don’t feel comfortable in a full suit, so they give up and stick to a t-shirt and sweatpants.

But it doesn’t have to be black and white like this. There are all kinds of ways to learn about classic style, and in fact, there is one specific style influence that almost all men connect to: sports.

Whether it’s baseball, sailing, hunting, or golf, sporting pursuits have influenced classic menswear for well over a century. The wardrobe staples they have produced serve as a natural onramp for men with limited exposure to classic menswear.

In this article, we’ll look at how historic pieces of sportswear can serve as “style anchors”, pieces that establish a natural foundation point and make transitioning into classic style easier.

Because sportswear has built-in utility, it’s easy to understand when and how to wear it. Today, we explore three different classic sports, the garments they created, and how you can use them as a reliable fallback option for dressing well in almost any environment.

Our mission here at Letters from the Old World is to share the secrets of Old World elegance, and our approach is two-fold:

1) Every Wednesday, we send a free article exploring the theology and philosophy of why beauty matters, particularly in regards to decor and dress.

2) Every Friday, we send What’s In a Fit, a members-only article exploring practical tips and guidelines for dressing well.

If this resonates with you, then subscribe below to join the aesthetic renaissance.

Lessons from the Court

One of the most obvious examples of this easy understanding and the function of a style anchor is the polo shirt. Upon its invention in the 1920s, the lightweight piqué cotton and an unstructured collar made the polo shirt a much more comfortable and practical alternative to the dress-style shirts that were the norm at the time.

When the polo was created, it was a bridge between the stricter formal style of the time and the growing demands of competitive sports. Today, however, the polo shirt is so valuable and versatile because it can work in the exact opposite direction.

The polo is the perfect anchor for helping men dress classically in informal or uncomfortable situations. A shirt with a collar almost always looks better than one without, and the polo is the easy solution to casual or high-demand activities.

Polos already dominate the golf course and the tennis court. But the real utility is in treating it like the style anchor it is. Allow the polo to be the least formal item in your wardrobe, and in return, dressing in a classic style suddenly becomes that much easier.

But while the polo is the most obvious option to start with, the real value lies in examining cultures where sport isn’t just a game, but a way of life. The styles emerging from these next two sporting cultures offer profound lessons precisely because they demand so much from each garment.

When you need your clothes to function well in a variety of environments and occasions, they must either rise to high standards, or be abandoned. The next three pieces we look at stood up to those demands, and became icons in the process. As such, they are the perfect sportswear anchors for a timeless classic wardrobe.
