There’s an interring parallel somewhere in here with the desaturation of color in automobiles too. I think part of it has to do with the financialization of everything. Don’t buy a car in a fun color because it lowers the resale value. Instead of picking the thing you like or that looks the best people feel forced into the “smartest“ financial decision.

We wrote a piece a while back that mentioned this phenomenon and the general disappearance of color everywhere over the years. Resale value is definitely a part of the issue, and people fearing judgement for trying something different is another.
