Well built, quality clothing made of natural materials can also last for decades, and in some instances generations, when proper care and maintenance is undertaken. Your clothes can then hold memories and tell stories. "I wore this jacket 20 years ago on so or so occasion" or "these boots have been to the top of a mountain in Wales".

Potentially, certain items can be passed down the generations. This is something I also enjoy about watches.

It's a beautiful thing to pass down items, whether watches, ties, or otherwise, to the next generation. "This was my grandfather's ___" is a line delivered with pride by many a man

I really love this content! It makes so much sense from so many avenues...and I would add that natural fibres on our body are also much healthier for us. If we're wearing polyester (especially if we're sweating in them...such as Lululemon yoga pants) it's really unhealthy for us. Polyester is made of plastics and wearing plastics on our bodies messes with our endocrine system. So I've done this for health reasons for years, but now I can add religious reasons to my list...thank you!

The health angle on clothing is such a rabbit hole. Plastics leeching, microfibres ending up in everything, new clothes offgassing… sticking to natural fibres seems like less of a headache than dealing with all that!

I agree, Ann! In recent years, we have been considering the harmful effects of what we put in our bodies; now we must also reevaluate what we put on our bodies.

I did watch the video link that showed how plastic bottles can turn into clothes, which I found fascinating. Although the thesis of this article was to steer away from unnatural materials, I found this to be a possible way to curtail the plastic bottle issue.

My instinct always told me that natural fibers were better, and I am a big fan of thrifting, but I hate to admit that I never thought about it from the angle of what is more pleasing to God. You’re absolutely right. The fact that human beings are the only creatures that wear clothing has to tell you something. It’s another thing that sets us apart from the rest of creation, and the theme is woven (pun intended) throughout Scripture. “They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” (Ps22:18). This alone says it all.

Yes! It’s a fascinating arena to dig into!!

Beautifully articulated. And the detailing on your suit is outrageous! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Bryanna! I plan to to cover this suit in depth in an upcoming "What's In a Fit" article. The culture and history behind this suit is astounding

Thanks for your kind comment Bryanna!

Excellent and timely insights! My husband and I have recently been discussing at length how shocking it is to realize how people can perform their own maintenance and upkeep, whether it be on houses, yard, cookware, cars, or clothing. We wonder if it speaks to a larger issue and informs how many of us also struggle to keep relationships of all of kinds alive.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! Your newsletter is a wonderful addition to the Substack universe.

Thanks for your kind words!

Your point about self-sufficiency is one that’s dear to my heart.

Interesting to connect it to the maintenance of relationship as well. It’s possible that there’s a kind of learned helplessness that spreads across domains, so not having instincts that you should maintain things in general means you don’t have that instinct even for something as basic as keeping relationships alive.

My teenage sons' favorite Christmas gifts were surplus 1940s wool army pants I found. They were surprised at the comfort and how excellent the drape was. I received the ultimate teen-speak compliment, "Mom these are so drippy!"

Wonderful! And caring for those clothes is so essential. My writing is all about mindful laundering and air-drying as a way to preserve wardrobes, the planet, and our attention.

Wait a minute… Nope, hard pass. God does not care one whit about whether you wear this or that. To think that what you wear can grab God’s attention is laughable.

Kelly Alvin Madden's avatar

Where does he say clothes will grab God’s attention?

And how can you suggest that God doesn’t care about clothing? It’s prominent in the Old and New Testament. Just one example:

Or which god are you talking about?

Ian McKerracher's avatar

Where what you like just as long as it is modest. Don’t try to tell me that God is interested in what you wear.

Matt 6:25-27

God certainly cared what Adam and Eve wore, what the priests wore, what the high priest wore.

And the very chapter you cite says that God cares what YOU wear, so you shouldn’t WORRY about it.

NOT because it doesn’t matter.

But because God cares more for us than the gorgeously-clothed lilies…

“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

And I can attest to God’s wonderful provision in giving me clothing unexpectedly:

I knew nothing about clothes. But I married a woman whose father owned a fine men’s clothing store.

And God will give beautiful white robes to his people in the New Jerusalem.

Where can you find natural clothing? I have no idea where to start

Any advice on where to find real clothes in the U.S. on a budget? Used is fine - but thrift stores (in my area) are filled with fake (and overly large) clothes...
